Answers to common questions about RetroKit.

Getting started

How do I add games?

In the library, select + and pick game files from Files or iCloud Drive. You can also share a game file to RetroKit from another app. On the Mac, you can also use File > Open.

RetroKit imports plain game files and .zip and .7z archives. An archive adds every supported game in it.

Where can I get games legally?

Use homebrew games, which their authors share for free, or copy the game files of cartridges that you own. Some homebrew games:

Which file types work?

System Files
NES .nes
SNES .sfc, .smc
Game Boy .gb, .gbc
Master System .sms
Genesis .md, .gen, .bin, .smd

Archives: .zip and .7z.

Playing

Can I use a controller or a keyboard?

Yes. Connect a game controller or a keyboard, and RetroKit uses it at once. To change the buttons, open the pause menu and select Controllers, then Remap buttons.

What is the difference between save RAM and save states?

Save RAM is the save that the game makes itself, like a cartridge battery save. RetroKit writes it for you while you play.

A save state is a copy of the whole game at one moment. Open the pause menu and select Save state to make one, and Load state to go back to it. Each game has 9 slots, and each slot shows a screenshot.

What does Resume do?

When you leave a game, RetroKit saves where you are. The next time you open the game, select Resume to continue, or Start over to start from the beginning.

iCloud

How does sync work?

RetroKit keeps your games and saves in your iCloud. Sign in with the same Apple Account on your iPhone, iPad and Mac, and your library shows on each device.

A game that is still in iCloud shows its download state in the library. It downloads when you open it.

What happens if I play the same game on two devices?

The newest save wins.

How do I move to a new device?

Sign in to iCloud on the new device and open RetroKit. Your games and saves download from iCloud.

Troubleshooting

A game does not start

Check that the file type is in the list under “Which file types work?”. Some NES games use cartridge hardware that RetroKit does not support yet. RetroKit then shows a message instead of the game.

A game from iCloud does not open

The game must download from iCloud first. Check your internet connection, then try again. If it still fails, open the Files app and check that the file downloads there.
